Scoring Klout: The Inside Scoop on the Web's Hottest Measure of Social Influence [Infographic]

Posted: 06 Jul 2012 11:09 AM PDT

Facebook allows us to obsess over the mundane details of our friends' lives, and Google+ has made hanging out a legitimate activity even for people over the age of 17. So all the Web needed to finally become high school all over again was a way to tell who the popular kids were. Now it's here in the form of Klout, a company that assigns a numerical value to how influential you are online.

Some critics have bashed Klout for a shaky score methodology, and The New Yorker called its social ranking premise downright evil. But the fact remains that if someone's claiming to measure your popularity, you're going to want to check it out – and try to increase it.

Is Google Plus a Failure [Infographic]

Posted: 05 Jul 2012 08:15 PM PDT

In the marketing community, we keep hearing about Google+ as the marketers dream platform. Features such as Ripples and the Circles function do seem incredibly appealing. It's fair to say that the audience segmentation and targeting options are unparalleled and in a marketer's perfect world, everyone would be using the service. But guys, I hate to piss on your rainbow, but no real people in the real world are using Google+.

Based on anecdotal and statistical information, it seems as though the only people that are truly involved in any sort of Google+ community are the people that stand to benefit from widespread uptake of the platform. That is never going to entice the masses into abandoning their longstanding relationship with Facebook, Twitter and their new BFF, Pinterest. At the moment, Google+ is like a pool of piiranhas. The piranhas in this metaphor being online marketers, waiting to segment, target and sell to any real person that dares to step into the water.

Why we won on student loans

The White House, Washington

Good afternoon --

It's July, and because Congress finally took action, 7.4 million students no longer have to worry about the interest rates on their Stafford loans doubling.

That's great news, but it was far from certain. Just a few weeks ago, it wasn't clear that it would happen.

We got this done because of you.

Americans like you spoke up on this issue. You took to Twitter and Facebook. You sent emails and talked to your friends and neighbors. And in the end, your voices made all the difference.

Last week, we sat down with a group of students who were watching this fight closely -- because the choice that Congress made would have an impact on each of them. They talked about what this legislation means, and why it was so important to speak out on this issue.

What they had to say was a powerful reminder of how everyday Americans can make their voices resonate in Washington -- and it's the kind of thing that can get you fired up for the fights ahead. Check it out:

Last year, when you spoke out on extending the payroll tax cut, you changed the debate. We saw the exact same thing last week with the fight for student loans.

These were both huge victories for the American middle class that couldn't have happened without you.

And it's exactly the kind of effort we'll need in the weeks and months ahead.

We're working to make it easier for responsible homeowners to refinance their mortgages. We're pushing Congress to take action to create jobs and get our economy back on track. We're working to reward businesses that create jobs here in America instead of the companies that ship jobs overseas.

And we need your voices in every single one of those fights.

We'll be in touch with more ways you can stand with President Obama to move our country forward. But for now, check out this video to remind yourself of the power you have:
