Going Where No "We The Geeks" Has Gone Before

This afternoon, we're celebrating the end of National Oceans Month and one year of progress on President Obama's Climate Action Plan -- so we're diving into ocean science by hearing from an expert living 63 feet below the surface.

At 2:00 p.m. ET, the White House and the Weather Channel will host "We the Geeks: SUBMERGED!" to discuss the importance of oceans to our way of life and how oceans both contribute to and are impacted by climate change and weather patterns -- with one of our participants streaming live from the ocean floor!

Join pioneers of ocean exploration and experts on weather and climate science on a Google+ Hangout at 2:00 p.m. ET. They'll share what scientists know about how oceans are the critical engine of the climate and weather we experience above the surface.

Seth's Blog : The existential crisis (and the other kind)

The existential crisis (and the other kind)

For some, crises are existential. The subsistence farmer, the parent without access to medical care, the person living in a makeshift shelter--this crisis might be the last one they ever encounter. Deal with this crisis or cease to exist.

As a result, crisis management became a cultural emergency, something we all focused on. High alert, drop everything, this is do or die, because if we don't get through this, it's over.

Now, of course, for those lucky enough to live in a well-off part of the world, insulated from disaster, few crises are actually this black and white—they merely feel that way.

The project might be in jeopardy, but you're not.
