We certainly had one a decade ago. Communication was moving too slowly, interactions took too long, ideas stumbled along. It used to take four weeks for someone to answer a piece of mail!
Leapfrogging that four week standard was one of the key reasons to adopt online business. Faster meant better, because faster led to tighter integration, more feedback and greater market share. Four weeks became two weeks became a day became an hour...
I'm not so sure we have a significant speed shortage any longer. Not in the loop of business communication, certainly. Being twice as fast to respond as you were last year may no longer be worth the risk and effort. It might not even be possible. (Though there are a few areas where first matters a lot, most notably the speed realtors respond to inquiries).
What's scarce? Good ideas, not just fast ones. Shipping the good ideas. Finding the spot where uncomfortable meets important.
I'd rather you think and instigate. Get back to me tomorrow, that's fast enough.

Posted: 22 Jul 2011 05:10 PM PDT So much for the Bloomberg assertion earlier today that Obama Aligns with Boehner seeking a debt deal. Late this afternoon Boehner walked out on talks with the president, refusing to accept a plan Obama called a "Grand Bargain". The Speaker's server is flooded with requests for the Text of Boehner's Letter but here is a copy courtesy of the Washington Post. Dear Colleague,Obama: 'I was willing to take a lot of heat' Inquiring minds are watching President Obama's response to Boehner: 'I was willing to take a lot of heat' Each Side Blames the Other The Washington Post reports Obama-Boehner talks collapse; each side blames the other Debt-reduction negotiations between President Obama and House Speaker John A. Boehner collapsed Friday, derailing an effort to reach a landmark agreement to cut spending, overhaul the tax code and avert a government default.Pared Down Approach Coming Up The Wall Street Journal discusses a pared down approach in Grand Bargain Talks Collapse The deal's demise, the latest twist in Washington's month-long search for an agreement to raise the debt ceiling, left House Republican leaders looking for a pared-down approach that would prevent the U.S. government defaulting on its obligations Aug. 2. Mr. Boehner said he would start negotiations with the Senate, which would continue through the weekend, with the goal of forging a new framework by Monday.Rating Agency Response The correct response from the rating agencies would be to downgrade US debt, not one notch but a handful of notches. Don't hold your breath on that. They will do one at most. Republicans Blew Opportunity for Game-Changing Legislation This was a dismal outcome, but hardly unexpected. Both sides are partially to blame but in my estimation Republicans blew it big time. They could have asked for anything in return for tax hikes. Here are three rock solid ideas.
Sadly, none of those sorely-needed ideas even came up in the discussions. I do not know if Obama or the Democrats would have gone along with those, but after all the Obama talk "I was willing to take a lot of heat", Republicans blew a golden opportunity to pass some game-changing legislation in return for some pissy tax hikes. Obama Aligns with Boehner Causing Democrats to Scream of "Volcanic Moment" Posted: 22 Jul 2011 09:13 AM PDT The deficit ceiling debate took an interesting turn as Obama is considering going forward with House Speaker Boehner on a $3 trillion deficit reduction deal that does not include immediate tax hikes. Democrats responded angrily, threatening a "volcanic moment". Please consider Obama Aligns With Boehner in Seeking U.S. Debt Pact Amid Internal Strife President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner, each facing strife within his own ranks and dwindling time to avert a U.S. default, pressed for a broad agreement to boost the debt limit while cutting spending by trillions of dollars and overhauling the tax code. The higher the cuts and the more front-loaded they are the better the deal, even if it includes some modest tax hikes. Clearly Obama wants all the cuts back loaded, after the election when the next Congress might even undo it. Nonetheless, there appears to be a small window of opportunity to do something sensible but demagogues from both parties threaten that chance. Abu Dhabi Oil Sheikh Writes His Name In The Sand Posted: 22 Jul 2011 04:56 PM PDT Let's see Donald Trump top this. On a sandy island in Abu Dhabi Sheikh Hamad bin Hamdan Al Nahyan has inscribed what is in effect the biggest graffiti tag the world has ever seen. Hamad, 63, a scion of the billionaire Abu Dhabi royal family, has gouged his name in capital letters two miles across and half a mile wide. His moniker is so big it can be seen from space (as this Google Earth pic demonstrates). The tip of the "H" reaches into the strait that leads to the Arabian Gulf, allowing Hamad to fill the first two letters of his name with water. The "M" looks partially filled as well. 25 Saddest Mug Shots You Will Ever See Posted: 21 Jul 2011 06:05 PM PDT I hope I never get my picture taken by the official police photographer. I will certainly do my best to make sure it won't happen. That being said, just in case you were contemplating breaking the law you might want to take a look at these mug shots, none of the people look particularly happy. I hope this will help you reconsider your actions and just get a job. |
